What is Fitness and Why do we Need it?
Hey I’m Dan, Adelaide’s newest CrossFit Affiliate owner. I also teach the next wave of up and coming PTs in Adelaide and have had many conversations with people about the true definition of fitness, and how it can be applied to the gym and in life.
I’m passionate about Mental Health and in preaching about the benefits of how CrossFit can improve our body and mind.
We are constantly faced with competing demands on our time, energy and finance. One thing should always remain as a priority, is our physical fitness.
In a 24 hour day, we may sleep up to 8 hours (if we’re lucky), therefore leaving us with about 16 waking hours to do, well let’s just say, “stuff”. Some of this “stuff” is important, however some is simply non-important and non-urgent that we can either put aside for another day, or drop altogether.
It is crazy to think about how much time we devote to other people and other things, to the detriment of our health, fitness and general happiness.
Being fit means we have the capacity to complete a range of physical tasks (jobs) at any time in any place, whether that be at the gym, at home, at work or out in the community.
A critical part of being fit, is doing regular intentional exercise, including strength training AND cardio conditioning (to name only 2 essential pieces of the pie).
Regular intentional exercise is critical to taking charge of our health and building a body that is physically fit and able to do whatever we want, whenever we want.
Regular exercise of at least 60 mins a day, 3 times a week will give you all of the following benefits (and please note, this is not an exhaustive list):
👉 Reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and type II diabetes
👉 Improve your quality of sleep and give you more energy
👉 Strengthen your bones and muscles
👉 Bolster your immune system to fight off infectious disease
👉 Increase your physical function in everyday life
👉 Make you a happier person
Summary
Constantly overcoming stressful situations in the gym, gives us more confidence to overcome tough situations in real life. When we train our minds to recognise that negative thoughts and feelings are perfectly normal – but they are not part of who we are – we are in no-way obligated to take action on them if it means that the action is not in line with our goals.
Regardless of our age, current fitness and health levels or background, we all can set aside regular time each week to exercise. Depending on our commitments and interests, this will look different for everyone, but we just need to commit to the process and find something that we can enjoy and do regularly.
Just remember, by putting yourself first and building your fitness, you are being a better person for you and for everyone else. This will eventually help you to give more and get more out of life.
