The importance of Community
At our gym, CrossFit Revelation, we have three simple Core Values that shape our culture and help us to achieve successful outcomes for our members. They are: Community, Courage and Commitment.
We post these values on our toilet and shower walls and on the main wall as you walk into the gym). We define community as “We’re friendly to others, we leave bad attitudes at the door and we encourage every last person until the workout is finished”. Simple right?
One of the biggest trends in the fitness industry is “community” and for a very good reason. Now, let’s make this 100% clear that we are talking about community – not groups, as there is a big difference.
CrossFit is centered on the principle that community is what keeps people motivated, inspired and in the game for longer. It is without a doubt that a true fitness community is one of the most effective ways of developing our physical, mental and emotional health.
What is a Group and a Community?
By definition, a group is simply a gathering of people. In a group, people don’t necessarily need to talk to each other, or get along. A community is a group of like-minded people who support and inspire each other, share their knowledge and help each other achieve things that could not otherwise be achieved on their own.
Benefits of Joining a CrossFit Community
If you to want make fitness more fun and achieve better results, we recommend finding a great fitness community, like a CrossFit gym and develop solid connections with your fitness pals. Fitness-based relationships helps us to connect with others whilst getting fitter, stronger and healthier and inspires us to stay in the game for longer.
Here are 5 benefits of a CrossFit community that you won’t get when training on your own:
- Encouragement: The word encouragement means to “put courage in to someone”. When training with a community of like-minded people, we have the wonderful opportunity of building up another human being and growing our personal grit through the encouragement and affirmation of our friends and colleagues. Community-based fitness gives us access to our own private cheerleader group that have got our backs and won’t let us back off when we feel like we’ve ran out of steam.
- Inspiration: Training with others who are streets ahead in their health and fitness journey and have a level of mental toughness that we aspire to, gives us inspiration and drive to push past our own fears and barriers and set new goals. When we see others doing what we want to do (or dare I say – looking like we want to look), we see that real change is within our reach.
- Accountability: Communities bring forth the benefits of accountability – meaning we have a connection and obligation to another person. Many people take up a personal membership plan with intentions of losing weight, getting fitter and looking better, but oftentimes the attendance falls away after the first month. One of the reasons people drop off so quickly is a lack of accountability and connection. The reality is, many of us lack the drive to “go it alone”. Therefore, having someone to encourage us to keep going, will hold us in good stead when we lose motivation or a better option comes up.
- Relationship: When you’re out there exercising in a community of fun, fit and inspiring people, rubbing shoulders in a tough workout, you form a strong bond. These people will get to know you, including all of your scars, pain points and drivers. After some time, you’ll forge meaningful relationships that can flow over to more than just working out with your pals – these peeps have your back and will give you the opportunity to impart into their world, which can be both powerful and encouraging.
- Fun: Training with a community always brings the laughter, fun and also a sense of excitement, no matter how hard the effort required. When exercising with others, you’ll enjoy a few jokes, some meaningful chats and no doubt walk away feeling as though you can’t wait for your next session.
Summary
Remember, we all start somewhere in our health and fitness journeys – with baby steps. We then gradually move forward from there, building positive habits into our lifestyles that are sustainable and achievable.
